Say hello to the "Wombat" - a beautiful sunken barge located off the coast of Nilwella. She lies at 23m deep and on a good day, divers can see up to 15-20m visibility. This historic wreck has become an artificial reef teeming with marine life.
According to scuba diver and shark expert Rex I. De Silva, the Wombat was under tow from Singapore carrying mining equipment. In early 1975, while off the south coast of Sri Lanka during heavy rain and rough weather, local fishermen boarded and stole the canvas hatch covers. The barge slowly took on water and sank off Nilwella.
The captain of the towing tug, a Korean, was armed and fired a few shots in the air, but the thieves got away. In early 1975, divers Maxwell Parsons and Rex I. De Silva were hired by the insurers to locate the wreck, which they did in a couple of days.
In late March 1975, a Singapore salvage company arrived to recover the cargo. Diver Howard Dias and Rex I. De Silva were hired to assist in diving operations. However, salvage operations were abandoned in early April with the onset of bad weather. Only a part of the cargo was recovered - the rest remains on the seabed to this day.
